Wise Words With Maggie 9: The importance of the coat

💡Wisdom no. 9: “it’s way too difficult to detangle my Cocker Spaniels coat – I will just ask the groomer to clip it all off..” that’s something you often hear from Cocker Spaniel owners. Many like the breed, but taking care of the coat is not on the top of their wish list. And I mean.. we fully understand what you mean, and we totally follow you. But everything is here for a reason, and so is the Cocker Spaniels coat. The coat and hair has a great purpose, and therefore it is a part of taking care of your dogs wellbeing.

Cocker Spaniels has two layers of hair. The undercoat, which helps keeping the dog warm when needed, preventing too much wind to go to their skin. The “primary hair”, so the thicker less “woolly” hair, is protecting the skin and also helps regulating the temperature. The primary coat is like a protection coat. Both preventing the sun from hitting their skin, as well as keeping them dry when it rains 🌦️

This protection hair is very important for the dogs health. Imagine how much skin damage it could cause, if your Cocker Spaniel was wet all the way to the skin, everytime there is a light rain, or if your dog couldn’t go out everytime the sun is shining ☀️

This is what potentially could happen if you clip your Cocker Spaniel to the skin (here I mean using a clipper to clip it all off on the neck, back and thighs), you will damage these different layers of the hair ✂️ And potentially it will never come back as it was.

The last picture here is a really great demonstration of what happens to the hair and skin, if you clip all hair off. In the video you see my friend Audrey. She has a really great coat, easy to take care of. She has just been groomed, and look how nice her primary hair on her back is, without any undercoat.

Lastly, as well as the anatomy has a purpose, so does the hair. Originally the Cocker Spaniel has its coat for protection when going hunting.BUT.. you will also see examples of standard Cocker Spaniel nowadays with too much hair, which makes it more difficult to take care of. As a breeder this is something you should try to balance.

The hair is health and protection for your dog ❤️
