Wise Words With Maggie 8: Walking your Cocker Spaniel without a leash on

💡Wisdom no. 8: Is it possible to walk your Cocker Spaniel without a leash on? Will they listen when you call their name? The answer to these questions naturally lies in a perspective of obedience training. But there are some instincts you should have in mind as well.

Generally, the Cocker Spaniel is a cooperative breed and to some extent also a pleasing breed. But there is a reason why many are wondering if their Cocker Spaniel has become deaf. And for some reason it is not when you open the refrigerator or find a bag of snacks they are deaf. No, it’s when they find something interesting on your walks, in the forest or wherever you go, they suddenly become deaf 🙉

In this video you see a Cocker Spaniel on a mission, working for his owner to flush the birds, whereafter the hunter can shot the bird. You see how deeply focused the dog is, and as this way of working is simply an instinct for the Cocker Spaniel. You can barely get your Cocker Spaniel to “snap out of it” unless you have a very well trained dog. The Cocker Spaniel in this video, reacts perfectly when Bettine whistle, which here is a command for “turn” – and here you see the corporation between dog and human, which takes dedication, training and knowledge about your breed.

So, if you want to walk with your Cocker Spaniel without a leash on, it will most likely require a lot of training, otherwise they will say bye bye as soon as they see or smell a hare, duck or geese 🪿 But.. everything of course is possible, so don’t give up! Just don’t set your expectations up too high too early.
