💡Wisdom no. 7: Did you know the name “Cocker Spaniel” comes from the woodcock 🪶 in the 1800s the spaniel was becoming increasingly popular as a hunting dog. At that point you had only one Spaniel breed called Land Spaniel, all looking like the Spaniel we know, but in different sizes. Later you decided to separate them into different breeds based on size and here in 1893 the Cocker Spaniel was recognized as a breed in the English Kennel Club. The name comes from “cocking spaniel”, as it was and is particularly good at flushing the Woodcock.
The Cocker Spaniel is a smaller hunting dog, and therefore extraordinary good at getting through dense cover to push up the birds or other animals, for the hunter to shoot them. This day, the Cocker Spaniel is still seen as a good companion when hunting for woodcocks as well as other birds. The woodcocks are not easy to hunt. They are quite small, lively and they fly lower to the ground. When you shoot your first woodcock it’s a quite big deal 🏆The tradition is, that you kiss the bird and you put the feather in your hat or honor it in some other way. And can carry this with much pride!
