Wise Words With Maggie 6: Living with a Cocker in an apartment

💡Wisdom no. 6: There seems to be many opinions on whether you can have an active dog, like the Cocker Spaniel, when you live in an apartment. Thinking about my last wise post and well.. also my current living situation, my answers is: yes, you can be a Cocker Spaniel owner, and live in an apartment at the same time.

In my opinion it simply comes down to, how much time you are willing to put into your dogs life.

As written before, the Cocker Spaniel is good at adapting to different environments. This also includes living in the city, walking around in crowded streets or maybe having a smaller living space when inside. BUT you definitely need to consider, if you are willing to invest the time in long walks, going to the woods outside the city and naturally also invest time in basic dog training and mental activities. This is not only something you need to consider when living in an apartment, but to some extension also when living in a house with a big garden.

Yes, the Cocker Spaniel needs to be activated in hours EVERY SINGLE DAY. That is not necessarily easy, when living in the city – but it is possible, if you really want it. If you are not willing to invest so much time in your dog, you should consider another breed. Preferably a breed, from some of the non-working groups.

Honestly sometimes I think it is even better living in an apartment. That means my humans never have the option to just let me out in the garden, if they are having a busy or lazy day 😇 Cocker Spaniels are hard work, but they are worth it! Simple as that 🧡

*according to Maggie (9 year old Cocker Spaniel) and human (3rd generation Cocker Spaniel breeder).
