💡Wisdom no. 12: Did you know, the Cocker Spaniel actually come in 18 different colors 🎨

The colors are divided into two groups; solid colours and particolours. Many breeders only breed one of the two, as it can be difficult to cross the two groups of colours, and also just because they maybe have a love for one or the other.
The solid colours are: Black; red; golden; chocolate; black and tan; chocolate and tan. Many believe the black and tan or chocolate and tan belong to the particoloured since they have two colours, but the tan colour is basically “an add on” to the foundation colours. The most popular in the solids are the reds and blacks. These are also the “easiest” to breed due to the genetics. Also, a lot remember the reds from their childhood. They were incredibly popular in the 70s.
The particolours are:
Bicolours: Black and white; orange and white; liver and white; lemon and white.
Tricolours: Black, white and tan; liver, white and tan
Roans: Blue roan; orange roan; lemon roan; liver roan; blue roan and tan; liver roan and tan.
Here the blue roans are the most popular.
Naturally when breeding the most important things to have look for is the health, temperament and containing the breed specific traits.. not colours. But actually the colours of the coat is not without importance, as it also comes with pigmentation. So, for instance if you breed red, on red, on red, on red you do risk to loose good and strong coat structure, bone substance and pigmentation in eyes and on the nose. For example, when breeding for the chocolate colours, where it is more difficult to cross in other colours, you often see dogs with yellow eyes and light coloured nose 🐽And I have to say, this is my experience without knowing much about the science behind it.
Colours are often something people can relate to, and therefore they have an opinion about it. Like “we would like to have a female black and tan”.But you cannot order your desired colour or gender, so remember health, temperament and breed characteristics comes first 🧡
