💡Wisdom no. 11: Here comes a wisdom about a maybe less charming trait of the Cocker Spaniel. Perhaps some will disagree or some won’t recognize this from their own Cockers, but it is known that Cockers can have a tendency to guard their resources, more than some other breeds do. Resources could be many things like; food, toys, bed, blankets, shoes, clothes or even their humans. Most commonly seen is guarding their food and toys.
In a world where we have higher expectations to our dogs, I think this trait for the Cockers is becoming increasingly visible. Sometimes we as humans have a tendency to take the dog out of dog, and put in human baby instead. The dogs are part of our family and we expect them to behave nicely, even though we again and again cross their (dog)limits. If we cannot read our dog’s language or know the breed well, we risk to cross this limit so many times, that the dog will react lastly.
The thing is, it doesn’t have to become an issue, if it is handled in the right way. I’m no professional (professional what? Professional dog? 🤣), but I surely will advise to train your dog when they are puppies, to prevent the resources guarding to develop into something toxic.
A Cocker Spaniel needs loving, cooperative, positive and firm training. You won’t get long with harsh methods or forcing (guess that goes for all dogs!) Simple tricks to prevent resource guarding could be to play small games where you switch things. So let’s say your dog has a toy, that you would like to take, then you offer a treat(of higher value than the toy) for the switch. Also small cooperation things in the everyday life like doing tricks, learning to wait until you get a go when food is served, etc. helps strengthen the bond to your dog.
For me, this is something you should consider when choosing the Cocker Spaniel as your new best friend – and trust me, they will be your best friend 🧡.
