Cocker Maggie & Co

Wise Words With Maggie 2: The Merry Cocker

“The merry Cocker”.. so it says in the breed standard for the English Cocker Spaniel. The ever wagging tail is one of the most important characteristics of the breed.

It comes in many forms and sometimes has it own ways of wagging. Some wagging slow and steady, some wagging with all of the body, some more like a propeller (see picture no. 3 for context), and some are just wagging all the time, even while sleeping (that’s me!). It’s like a personality trait 💥

Besides being a factor in why, many people find the cocker spaniel so adorable, it is also a huge part of the breeds language. For some breeds, the ears are showing a lot of signals, whereas the spaniels signal a lot with the tail. You see the basic dog-feelings like; happy, afraid or curios, but also while hunting the tail is genius way for people to read their Cocker Spaniels. If you ever see you Cocker Spaniel on the track of something interesting, you will most likely see it wagging the tail as well, but it looks slightly different and more “busy” from the usual happy tail.

Take good care of the wagging tails during winter times. Happy Cocker Spaniel tails can sometimes get damaged at the tip during a cold winter time if the skin gets too dry ❄️
