Cocker Spaniels are often said to have issues with ear infections👂 Due to the purpose as a hunting dog, the ears are long to make it easier to capture sent while hunting, as well as protecting the ear canal.
As most Cocker Spaniels are bred with a heavier coat nowadays, it has become increasingly important to cut the hair in the ears as well. If the ear canal is clogged with hair, the ear will get damp and with no oxygen, the risk of different sort of infections will increase.
We experience that not all vets are aware of this and in many cases they will give some sort of medication to kill the infection 💊 . Often you should start by cutting away all hair and give the ear a good clean. In that way you’ll give your Cocker Spaniel ears the best conditions to stay healthy 🧡
